Air & Lack Thereof, James Blake. *****
I can’t claim to have been there at the very beginning: I bought this record after hearing CMYK, but it remains my Go To James Blake track.
The sheer weirdness of the woodwind(?), eclectic organs and hypnotic gospel sample all build agonisingly to the drop.
Combined with hihats recorded by a drummer with a tic, Air… creates the soundtrack to a dubstep funeral march.
“Born in Bethlehem”
monotonously loops over and over, as the percussion and synthesisers really kick in. Haunting.
