Weekend Rewind: James Blake

Air & Lack Thereof, James Blake. *****

I can’t claim to have been there at the very beginning: I bought this record after hearing CMYK, but it remains my Go To James Blake track.

img_0764The sheer weirdness of the woodwind(?), eclectic organs and hypnotic gospel sample all build agonisingly to the drop.

Combined with hihats recorded by a drummer with a tic, Air… creates the soundtrack to a dubstep funeral march.

“Born in Bethlehem”

monotonously loops over and over, as the percussion and synthesisers really kick in. Haunting.
